What Polybutylene Pipe Is, and Why It Matters
Shell Oil sold the resin from the late 1970s until production stopped in early 1996. Builders liked it because it was cheap, quick to run, and flexible enough to bend around framing instead of cutting and joining rigid pipe. It went into homes across the East Valley through most of the 1980s and into the mid-1990s.
No federal agency banned or recalled the pipe. The Cox v. Shell Oil class action settled with a fund to cover repiping instead, which is part of why there’s no clean ban date people can point to.
We pay the closest attention to homes built roughly 1978 through the mid-1990s, but a build year is a clue, not proof. Leftover stock kept showing up in installs after the main run, and plenty of older homes have had sections repaired or fully repiped since. So the question isn’t just how old the house is. It’s whether PB is actually in yours, and what shape it’s in.
That matters because polybutylene fails from the inside. A section that looks dry and clean from where you’re standing can already be brittle underneath. We’ll get into the signs of that further down.
How to Recognize Polybutylene Pipe
Color is your first clue, and it’s never the deciding one. Polybutylene is usually light gray or light blue, though black, white, cream, and silver-gray turn up too. Common diameters run 1/2 inch to 1 inch. ASTM D-3309 covers PB for hot- and cold-water supply lines only. It was never approved for drain, waste, or vent pipe.
Press it with your thumb. The wall gives slightly, a rubbery flex you won’t get from rigid plastic or metal. A cut or broken end shows one uniform layer of plastic straight through, with no colored banding.
Markings and Labels
The printed marking is the strongest evidence you’ll get without calling a plumber. Color alone proves nothing, and plenty of houses get assumed repiped when they haven’t been touched.
Text runs in ink along the pipe, repeated at intervals. Look for PB2110, D-3309, and B137.8. You may also see SDR 11, UPC, IAPMO, a size call-out like 1/2″ CTS x 5/8″ OD, and a manufacturer stamp.
Ink fades. Thirty years in an Arizona attic is hard on it. Hold a flashlight at a low angle so the light rakes across the surface, wipe the pipe with a damp cloth, and check a few feet farther along if the first stretch is illegible.
Photograph anything you find, straight on and close enough to read. Those photos are what we’ll want to see.
What the Fittings Tell You
Fittings can help place the approximate era of the install. Earlier systems commonly used acetal fittings with aluminum crimps, followed by acetal fittings with copper crimps, then all-copper fittings and crimps.
Treat that as an approximate timeline rather than a hard date. A repair can swap in a newer fitting on an older pipe, and leftover stock sometimes shows up after a style had already gone out of use.
The fitting is a clue. The printed marking on the pipe is what actually confirms the material.
Telling Polybutylene Apart From Other Pipe
Gray plastic alone proves nothing. Several materials share that tone, and a house can easily have two or three pipe types after years of patch repairs. Two checks settle most cases: bend the pipe, then read what’s printed on it.
Polybutylene vs. PEX. Both are flexible plastic, which is why people mix them up. PEX is usually a single solid color, such as red, blue, or white, with crisp printed sizing along it, and it’s what most repipes use today. Polybutylene runs duller, often a flat gray or blue-gray, and is commonly stamped PB2110. Flexibility won’t separate the two, since both bend by hand. The marking will.
Polybutylene vs. copper. Copper is rigid metal. It won’t flex, and it shows a shiny orange-brown surface or a green-brown patina where it’s aged. Joints are soldered, with a smooth silver fillet at the fitting. Polybutylene stays flexible and connects with crimp rings, never solder. A crimp ring rules out soldered copper, but PEX uses crimp rings too, so the marking still does the real work.
Polybutylene vs. CPVC. CPVC is rigid, usually cream or beige, and joined with solvent glue. You’ll often see a smear of glue or purple primer at the fittings. Polybutylene bends where CPVC won’t and connects with crimp fittings instead of glue.
If you find one suspicious section, check a second exposed run elsewhere in the house. PB was normally installed as a whole-house system, so a match in two spots is far stronger evidence than one. Mixed repairs are common enough now that finding both PB and newer PEX in the same house isn’t unusual.
Tools You’ll Need for a First Pass
A flashlight, a tape measure, and your phone camera cover most of what’s useful to check yourself. A pressure gauge on a hose bib gives you a static reading. Typical residential pressure runs 40 to 60 psi, and anything below 40 is worth investigating, though pressure alone won’t tell you what the pipe is made of.
Where to Look
Look under sinks, in basements and crawl spaces, at the water heater connections, and along unfinished ceilings or walls in a garage or utility room.
Most East Valley homes in Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe are slab-on-grade, with supply lines run through the attic rather than a crawl space, so the attic and the water heater closet are usually the first two spots worth checking.
Find one exposed section and you’ve learned a lot about the rest, since PB was almost always installed as a complete system.
At Shutoff Valves
Check the pipe entering the wall itself, not the braided or ribbed connector between the valve and the fixture. Those get swapped out routinely and tell you nothing about the pipe behind them.
Follow the line back to where it disappears into the drywall. That short stub is often the only visible piece of the original system in a finished room.
Note the fitting and crimp material while you’re down there, and photograph what you find before you touch anything else.
Where the runs are hidden behind finished walls, start with what’s exposed. Some plumbers can inspect inside supply lines with a camera, though that means draining and depressurizing the system first, and it’s limited by pipe diameter and how tight the bends are.
Signs of Damage
Brittleness is the clearest one. Healthy PB gives slightly under hand pressure. Pipe that cracks, creaks, or snaps instead has lost that flex.
A chalky, flaking inner surface shows up when a section is cut open or during a camera inspection. Cloudy or discolored tap water and a steady drop in pressure point the same direction, since the material breaking down narrows the bore.
Hot and cold cycling doesn’t cause the deterioration, but it puts extra stress on pipe that’s already weak.
Visible cracking, splitting, or blistering on the outside means the failure is already well underway.
Why It Fails
Chlorine and other oxidants in tap water react with the inner surface of the pipe, and the plastic turns brittle over time.
Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and chloramine attack PB fittings the same way. The material flakes, erodes, and develops small cracks that deepen through the wall.
That’s why the outside can still look fine. The breakdown starts where the water touches the plastic and works outward.
What to Do If You Find Polybutylene
Confirm the material first. Gray plastic and an older build date aren’t proof on their own. Read the pipe for PB2110 or D-3309 before you plan around a repipe you might not need.
Document what you see without disturbing the pipe: clear photos of the markings, fittings, and crimp rings.
If the pipe is already brittle, bending or cutting it to get a better look can turn a quiet inspection into a leak, so leave that part to us.
Then get it professionally evaluated. Presence and condition are two different questions, and a single leaking section doesn’t mean the rest of the house is fine, or that it needs a full repipe either.

Replacing Polybutylene Pipes
A full repipe replaces every run of polybutylene with a modern approved material, usually PEX or copper. It’s the only fix that deals with the system as a whole instead of chasing one failure at a time.
Here’s what a full repipe actually fixes:
- Protects against water damage: Removes the risk of a sudden, unwarned failure causing leaks or flooding.
- Improves water quality: Stops aging, degraded plastic from affecting what comes out of the tap.
- Restores water pressure and flow: New pipe removes any internal narrowing caused by degrading PB.
- Resale: Polybutylene must be disclosed in most residential sale transactions and commonly triggers buyer repair requests or price negotiation; replacing it takes that off the table.
