Your water heater dies on a Tuesday. Now you have to decide whether to put gas or electric back in the same spot, and that choice can affect both the install bill and what you pay to heat water for the next decade.
There is no universal winner. The right call depends on what your house already has, how much hot water your household uses at once, and what your utilities charge.
For most East Valley homes, those three things come first. Models come later.

Both gas and electric water heaters give you the same thing at the tap. What changes is how they make it and what the house needs to support them.
A gas water heater burns fuel underneath the tank. The heat moves through the water, and combustion gases vent safely out of the house.
An electric water heater uses heating elements inside the tank itself. No flame, no gas line, no combustion vent.
That difference shows up in the installation, the recovery time, the maintenance, and where the heater can realistically go.

What does installation cost depend on?
Mostly what your house already has.
A properly sized gas line and a usable vent already in place? Putting another gas heater in usually stays straightforward.
Right electrical circuit and enough panel capacity already there? Replacing an electric heater with another electric unit is the same story.
Switching fuels is where the bill grows legs.
Going from gas to electric can mean new wiring, a dedicated circuit, and possibly panel work. Going from electric to gas means running gas piping, adding venting, and figuring out where that vent can legally and safely go.
That’s why we rarely recommend switching fuels just because one unit looks cheaper on the shelf. You have to price the whole job.
Do gas water heaters cost less to run?
Sometimes. Not automatically.
Every water heater has an efficiency rating, usually shown as Uniform Energy Factor, or UEF. Higher is more efficient within the same type and usage category.
It still doesn’t tell you what the heater costs to run at your house.
Gas and electricity are billed differently, so pull out the actual rates on your Southwest Gas, SRP, or APS bill and compare those. Time-of-use electric plans matter too. A tank reheating during expensive peak hours changes the math.
So: check your utility rates, then compare heaters on both efficiency and fuel cost.
Don’t buy the lower UEF gas unit because gas is supposed to be cheap. And don’t buy the higher UEF electric unit assuming efficiency alone means a lower bill.
How much hot water does your household need?
This is where gas usually has the edge.
Gas storage heaters tend to recover faster once the tank has been drawn down. Several people showering back to back, somebody running the dishwasher, a kitchen sink pulling hot water at the same time. That’s when recovery matters.
Standard electric tanks usually recover more slowly. That doesn’t make them bad. It means sizing matters more when demand is high.
A smaller household that spreads showers out through the morning may never notice the difference.
A five-person house trying to get everybody out the door before 8 a.m. absolutely might.
Gas water heater pros and cons
Gas makes sense when the house is already set up for it and the household uses a lot of hot water in a short window.
Why homeowners choose gas
For a busy household, faster recovery is the big advantage.
Some older standing-pilot gas heaters can also keep producing hot water during a power outage. Many newer gas units use electronic ignition or powered venting, though, so don’t assume gas automatically means hot water when the power is out.
What is the downside of gas?
Gas brings combustion into the picture.
The burner, gas connection, vent, and combustion air all have to be right. Carbon monoxide safety matters. Venting gets checked, not assumed.
Gas heaters also have more combustion-related parts to inspect and maintain than a standard electric tank.
If your house doesn’t already have gas or a usable vent path, converting to gas gets expensive fast.
Electric water heater pros and cons
Standard electric water heaters are simple. That’s a big part of the appeal.
Why homeowners choose electric
No flame, no combustion gas, no flue running through the house.
There are fewer combustion-related components to service, and an electric tank can go in places where running a gas vent would be difficult or expensive.
What is the downside of electric?
Recovery is usually slower.
That matters most in larger households, or homes where several fixtures pull hot water close together.
Electric also depends completely on power. When the power goes out, you have whatever hot water is already sitting in the tank. Once that’s gone, it’s gone until the power comes back.
And if the house isn’t already set up for electric water heating, the electrical work can wipe out the simplicity advantage. Panel capacity, breaker space, and the wiring run all matter.
How does Arizona hard water affect gas and electric heaters?
Pretty much equally, just in different spots.
East Valley water carries a lot of minerals. Heat that water and some of those minerals settle out as sediment.
On a gas heater, sediment collects at the bottom of the tank above the burner, so the heater has to force heat through the buildup before it reaches the water.
On an electric heater, that same sediment collects around the lower heating element.
Either way you get slower heating, popping or rumbling noises, higher energy use, and a tank that doesn’t last as long as it should.
What maintenance do both types need?
Both gas and electric storage tanks need the basics.
Flushing the tank keeps sediment from piling up. In Arizona, that matters.
The anode rod matters too. That’s the sacrificial metal rod inside the tank that corrodes so the steel tank doesn’t. Once that rod is spent, the tank itself starts taking the damage.
Gas units add burner and vent inspections to the list. Electric units have heating elements and thermostats instead.
Neither one is maintenance-free. Electric just has fewer combustion-related parts.
How long do gas and electric water heaters last?
Some make it longer. Some die sooner.
Arizona hard water, installation quality, maintenance, water pressure, and how hard the household works the heater all matter more than people think.
Electric tanks sometimes get a little more life out of it because there’s no central flue passage heating and cooling through the middle of the tank. We still wouldn’t choose electric over gas on lifespan alone.
A well-installed, maintained heater of either type has a much better shot at a long life than one that gets ignored.
Should you choose gas or electric for your East Valley home?
Start with the house.
If you already have gas, a good vent, and enough hot-water demand to benefit from faster recovery, gas is usually the easy answer.
If the house is already wired for electric, or you don’t have gas service, or you just want the simpler setup with no combustion, electric may make more sense.
Then look at the household.
How many people live there? How many showers happen in the same hour? Is the laundry running while everybody is getting ready?
That tells us more than the sticker on the front of the heater.
Should you switch from gas to electric or electric to gas?
Only when there’s a good reason.
Switching fuels means paying for infrastructure, and that’s a lot of money to spend before the new heater even starts doing its job.
Sometimes it makes sense. Maybe the gas vent is shot. Maybe the panel is being upgraded anyway. Maybe you’re changing the way the house uses energy.
But if the existing setup works and there’s no strong reason to change, like-for-like replacement is usually the cleaner move.
What about heat pump water heaters?
If you want electric but care a lot about operating cost, ask about a heat pump water heater.
Instead of creating heat with standard resistance elements all the time, a heat pump unit moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank.
That can use much less electricity than a standard electric water heater.
Arizona can be a good fit because garages stay warm for a large part of the year, and heat pump units like warm surrounding air. They do need enough space around them, somewhere for condensate to drain, and the right electrical setup.
Not the answer for every garage or utility room. Worth pricing when long-term energy use matters.
What about tankless water heaters?
Tankless is another option, especially if you’re already replacing equipment and want to rethink the setup.
Gas tankless works well in a lot of East Valley homes. It heats water only when you use it, so there’s no tank sitting there hot all day.
It has its own installation requirements, though. Gas supply, venting, flow rate, and temperature rise all have to be sized correctly.
And Arizona hard water still matters. Tankless heat exchangers need to be descaled on schedule.
Whole-house electric tankless is a harder sell in many homes because it can demand a lot of electrical capacity all at once. We look at the panel before we get excited about that option.
The bottom line
Gas or electric isn’t really a brand question. It’s a house question.
What fuel is already there? What does your household pull at peak times? What are you paying for gas and electricity? And how much work does the house need before either option can go in?
If one setup is already there and working properly, replacing like with like is usually the simplest route.
If the choice is genuinely close, we look harder at hot-water demand and operating cost. And when neither standard gas nor standard electric looks especially good, that’s when heat pump or tankless starts earning a serious look.
